How to Sign Out of Gmail on Android

Sign out of Gmail on Android

All Android devices have a prerequisite of signing in with a Google account to use the Google services. You must either sign in or create a new Google account during the setup of your device. This account is linked to all the Google services like Play Store, YouTube, Gmail, etc. on that device. If your device is locked and only you know the password, it’s fine to leave or close tabs without signing out. But if you are handing over your device to someone else, it would be best to sign out of your account for obvious privacy concerns. Follow these simple steps to sign out of Gmail on Android without a hassle:

Sign out of Gmail from the Gmail App

As mentioned before, Android devices use your Google account for using lots of services and apps by and linked with Google. To sign out of your Gmail account on Android, you will have to remove the account from that device. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. First, you need to open the “Accounts” tab from your phone’s settings.
  2. Another option is launching your Gmail app, tap on your account’s profile(top right) and then tap on “Manage Accounts on this Device”, this will be at the bottom.
  3. Both of these methods will open the “Accounts” tab in your phone’s settings.
  4. Select the “Google” option from the list.
  5. Tap on the account you want to sign out of.
  6. Select the “More” (three dots) option at the bottom of the screen.
  7. Tap on “remove account” and you are done!

Sign out of Gmail on a Browser

  1. When you are done using Gmail on the web, tap on your account profile in the top right corner.
  2. A pop-up tab will appear, tap on the “Sign out” button, which will be at the bottom.
  3. If you have logged in with multiple accounts you will also have the option of signing out of all accounts.
  4. You cannot choose which accounts to sign out, you must sign out of them all.

Remotely Sign out of Gmail

If, by chance, you forget to sign out of a shared device or lose any of your devices, you can remotely sign out of Gmail. This method will also help you in removing the access of your Google account for that device. You will need a device connected to the internet to do this. Follow these steps to ensure that your Google account stays secure:

  1. Launch any browser and log in to your Gmail account.
  2. Tap on your profile in the top right corner of the page.
  3. Tap on “Manage your Google account”.
  4. You can also access this page directly from Google One (app/web page).
  5. Go to the Security tab.
  6. Tap on “Manage devices”, it should be at the bottom.
  7. Here you can see the list of all your devices currently connected with your Google account. Tap on the “Menu” button (three dots) in the top right corner.
  8. Tap on the “Sign out” option.
  9. After you confirm the pop-up, your account will be removed from that device.

Few things to always keep in mind

  • When using a shared device (computers in a library or other such devices), it is crucial that you sign out of your Google account when you are done. Directly closing the tab will not remove your account automatically! You must sign out manually before closing a tab!
  • Signing out removes the access of that device over your account and all that is linked with your account (bank accounts, passwords, etc.)
  • The whole process of signing in and out takes less than a minute, but it is an important step to ensure your account’s security and privacy.
